Amazing Works

…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16

When I am not doing the ministry of the church, or hanging out with my family, I am usually at my easel making art. In the past two months I have been able to produce about four completed paintings, a new record for me. I love being an artist almost as much as I love being a Pastor.

When a piece is complete I like to put them alongside the other completed works and step back and look at them all together… like I am introducing a new baby to the family. I am happy to say so far my new paintings are all getting along beautifully.

I am asked if I have a favorite among them. The easy answer is they are all my favorites, but they were not all a joy to produce. Sometimes the colors I chose didn’t blend so well with the other colors on the canvas. Sometimes my hand would inadvertently smear another image I just painted on the canvas. Sometimes a piece will have to endure numerous ‘do overs’ before its ultimate completion. For some of my paintings the journey from my easel to the gallery of my living room is a short one… for others it takes a little longer… but they all get there eventually. In the end it doesn’t really matter how long it took, because they are where they belong, with the other works of my hand.

The church is filled with amazing works of the hand of God. We have all been uniquely crafted and designed by a loving Heavenly Father with the purpose of bringing Glory to Him through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Some journeys to the church, or back to the church, take a little longer than others.

Fortunately the difference between my gallery and God’s Church, is that completion is not up to me nor is completion a requirement to be there. The Church of Jesus Christ is a gallery of incomplete works, still being formed and fashioned into the image of Jesus by the brush strokes of the Holy Spirit, but like my gallery of paintings, we are where we belong, with Him and with each other. We are all His favorites… even the ones whose journey may take a little longer… and there is room for them.

It is my prayer that during this Easter Season that First Baptist Church will let our light shine so bright that others may see the good works that God is doing in us, and will come home to “Hang” with us in this Lord’s gallery that we call home. Blessings, Pastor Joel
