Open for Business

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8

Okay, guilty pleasure confession time… I love to watch this show on the Food Network called “Restaurant Impossible.” The premise is that Chef Robert, a world renowned Chef and restaurateur, is invited to come and give failing restaurants the tools they need to become successful. He only has two days and $10,000 in which to implement the changes, which can include renovating everything from the décor to the menu, to the service, to the staff.

Each episode begins with Chef Robert arriving on the scene and evaluating the condition of the business as it is right now in an attempt to discern exactly why the restaurant is failing. Quite often he discovers that the food is terrible, and the interior uninviting. He then lets the owners’ of the failing restaurant know exactly what he thinks about the food and everything else. Then he begins the transformation. The old place is cleared of everything, and the implementation of the new restaurant gets underway.

My favorite part of the show is when he demonstrates for the cooks how to prepare menu items with fresh ingredients, and efficient cooking techniques. In the end the menu is simplified, the food is delicious, the cooks are happier, and the old restaurant is given a beautiful new fresh look.

Besides the $10,000 Chef Robert brings to each project a wealth of experience, knowledge, and expertise. What seems to be the most difficult challenge is getting the owners to accept the alterations for success, and convincing them to let go of the habits that have been leading them to failure. Much to Chef Robert’s frustration it takes a lot of energy to get the owners to be open to the changes they must make in order to save their dying dream. Many cling stubbornly to an old fixture or recipe even if that thing is contributing to the failure of their business.

When the owners are open to all that Chef Robert has to give and teach them, the transformation is complete. When they see the finished product, their jaws drop in amazement over the transformation of their restaurant, and then the “New” restaurant is Open for Business

In the Holy Spirit, God has given us everything we need to live a life in Christ that is filled with Love, Joy, Peace and Power. Through the Holy Spirit we have everything we need for the complete spiritual renovation of our life. The Holy Spirit takes away our fear. He gives us the tools to share the gospel with the world. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to overcome, in any and all circumstances that come our way with grace and dignity. The Holy Spirit can show us greater ways to worship, praise, and love God with child-like abandon. Our prayer and devotional life can be transformed through the power of the Holy Spirit. Strength is ours, Grace is ours, forgiveness is ours, true change is ours because of the gift of the Holy Spirit… If…we are open to all the Spirit has to give, and teach us.

The question we need to ask ourselves is, what are the areas and attitudes in ourselves where we have the lid is so tightly screwed, and the door so securely locked, that nothing new can be poured in and nothing fresh can be brought in? If we are not open for the Holy Spirit to do business in us, then how can we hope to do the Business of the Lord?

Let us all be open to the movement of His Spirit, so that our jaws will drop in amazement over the transformation He has brought.
